Project Based Learning

If you have a student at Porters Point School it is highly likely that you have heard the term "Project Based Learning." As a school community we have begun to implement PBL across grade levels. This looks different at each level but has the same basic premise. PBL involves the identification of a real life problem and the development of a solution to that problem. The catch is that all of this work is done by students. PBL incorporates student voice, teamwork, self assessment, and presentation skills while working across academic subject areas.
There are many great articles that go further into the definition of PBL but I found this one especially helpful: Edutopia.org 'What is PBL"

The second grade team has worked with students to identify ways that we can make our school a better place. This has involved: building five raised beds for vegetable gardens, planting seeds and growing vegetables for these gardens, painting signs to decorate the gardens, researching the importance of pollinators such as honey bees and designing pollinator gardens, planting pollinator gardens, and much, much more.

One of the great things about PBL at PPS is that it requires family volunteers. Each spring you will have teaching teams reach out asking for help with various projects. No matter your background we would love to have you join us!
